Lansdale Man Accused of Assaulting Police Officers, Possession of Methamphetamine: Police

(Editor’s note: due to the nature of the incident, some details have been redacted from the criminal complaint.)

A Lansdale man is facing assault and drug charges after he allegedly threw a chair at a police officer and was later found to be in possession of methamphetamine.

Matthew Mattero, 45, has been charged with two felony counts of aggravated assault along with misdemeanor counts of simple assault, resisting arrest, reckless endangerment, possession of a controlled substance and possession of drug paraphernalia in connection with the incident.

According to the criminal complaint, police were dispatched to a home in the borough on Oct. 1 for a third domestic incident within a one-hour period. During the incident, Mattero allegedly screamed at responding police and argued with them while under the influence of a controlled substance, police said.

The complaint states that Mattero came within five inches of the face of one of the responding officers, at which point the officer moved Mattero away from his face and a scuffle ensued. Police described Mattero as having glassy eyes and unsteady balance, and said he was uncontrollably yelling and unable to control his emotional state.

During the scuffle, police said that Mattero smacked one officer’s arm away from him and later freed himself from their grasp and threw a chair at another officer. Mattero then forced open a door and ran to his car, police said.

The report states that police prevented Mattero from closing the door to the vehicle, at which point he continued to resist for approximately five minutes. Police then threatened to deploy their Tasers, at which point Mattero stopped resisting and allowed police to handcuff him, the report states.

Once in custody at the police station, a search of Mattero allegedly revealed an empty baggie, a baggie with a white substance that tested positive for methamphetamine and a third baggie with methamphetamine residue.

Mattero was arraigned by Magisterial District Judge Maureen C. Coggins, who set bail at $5,000 cash. Mattero was then remanded to county jail after failing to post bail, and his next court appearance is a preliminary hearing scheduled for Oct. 28 at 12:45 p.m. in front of Magisterial District Judge Ed Levine.

(All suspects and defendants are innocent until proven guilty. This story was compiled using court records and the affidavit of probable cause.)
