Man Charged with Aggravated Assault Following Armed Standoff with North Wales Police

A Delaware County man is facing felony aggravated assault and weapons charges following an armed standoff with North Wales Police early Friday morning

Maurice Taylor, 27, of Sharon Hill, has been charged with felony counts of aggravated assault – attempts to cause serious bodily injury with a deadly weapon and prohibited possession of a firearm, along with misdemeanor counts of terroristic threats and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, in connection with the Nov. 20 incident.

According to the affidavit of probable cause, police were dispatched to a home along the 100 block of South Fifth Street at 12:36 a.m. for a report a domestic incident. Upon arrival, a female victim told police that Taylor had pointed a gun at her during an argument about her 9-year-old son finding the weapon under a stool in the bathroom, the report states.

Police then secured the perimeter around the house and the Central Montgomery SWAT unit was deployed to the scene, the report states. Negotiators from the SWAT unit made contact with Taylor by phone, and were able to convince him to surrender without further incident, police said.

Taylor denied any knowledge of the firearm, according to the complaint.

After receiving consent to search the home, North Wales Borough Police Chief Mike Eves located the handgun which had been hidden in a drop-ceiling, and the weapon was then positively identified by the victim, police said.

The complaint also states that Taylor was reported to be on state parole at the time of the incident, and he was prohibited from possessing a firearm.

Taylor was arraigned by Magisterial District Judge Suzan Leonard, who set bail at $50,000 cash. Taylor was then remanded to county jail after failing to post, and his next court appearance is a preliminary hearing on Dec. 3 at 11 a.m. in front of Judge Leonard.

(All suspects and defendants are innocent until proven guilty. This story was compiled using court records and the affidavit of probable cause.)
