Coronavirus Update: County Reports 149 New Cases, 14-Day Average Stands at 100.4

(There will be no update on May 17, as the county has announced that they will not be issuing a release.)

Montgomery County officials announced 149 new COVID-19 cases and eight additional confirmed deaths on Saturday afternoon, including nine new cases in the North Penn area.

Data shows that of the 149 cases reported on Saturday, 49 occurred in long-term care facilities, leaving a total of 100 new cases reported outside of those facilities. The countywide total now stands at 5,790 confirmed positive cases.

In the North Penn area, Montgomery Township has the most cases with 186 and 24 deaths, followed by Lansdale Borough with 148 and nine deaths, Hatfield Township with 122 and two deaths, Upper Gwynedd Township with 95 and 30 deaths, Towamencin Township with 92 and 10 deaths, Hatfield Borough with 20 cases and North Wales Borough with 11 cases.

Of note was one death being removed from each of the totals for Montgomery Township and Upper Gwynedd Township. No explanation was provided for their removal. (Note: we will ask about the removals during Monday’s press conference.)

Total cases in the North Penn area currently stand at 674 and 75 deaths. Cases in the neighboring communities are as follows:

  • Souderton Borough – 66
  • Telford Borough – 26
  • Franconia Township – 68 and seven deaths
  • Lower Salford Township – 56 and one death
  • Skippack Township – 52 and five deaths
  • Worcester Township – 35 and two deaths
  • Whitpain Township – 102 and four deaths
  • Lower Gwynedd Township – 125 and 19 deaths
  • Horsham Township - 130 and 18 deaths

Totals across the surrounding municipalities currently stand at 660 cases and 56 deaths. As of Saturday afternoon, Bryn Athyn has reported their first two positive cases, meaning all 62 municipalities within the county have reported cases.

The countywide death toll from the coronavirus now stands at 474, of which more than 80% have come from residents of long-term care and congregate living facilities. Upper Gwynedd Township has the fifth highest amount of deaths in the county at 31.

A 14-day average of 30 new cases or less per day is one of the primary metrics for Montgomery County moving into the yellow phase of reopening. As of May 16, the 14-day average stands at 100.4, according to county data.

Earlier on Saturday, Pennsylvania reported 989 new coronavirus cases, bringing the state’s total to 61,611 cases. The state also announced 61 new confirmed deaths, bringing the total to 4,403 across the commonwealth.

Of the residents across the state who have tested positive to date, the age breakdown is as follows:

  • Nearly 1% are aged 0-4
  • Nearly 1% are aged 5-12
  • Nearly 2% are aged 13-18
  • Nearly 6% are aged 19-24
  • Nearly 37% are aged 25-49
  • Nearly 26% are aged 50-64
  • Nearly 29% are aged 65 or older

In nursing and personal care homes, there are 13,257 resident cases of COVID-19, and 2,075 cases among employees, for a total of 15,332 at 556 distinct facilities in 44 counties. Out of the state’s total deaths, 3,043 have occurred in residents from nursing or personal care facilities.

To date, 4,432 healthcare workers and more than 2,100 food industry workers across the commonwealth have tested positive for the coronavirus. Hospitalization statistics show that 1,873 people are currently hospitalized across the commonwealth, of which 411 require the use of a ventilator. 44.8% of hospital beds and 38.3% of adult ICU beds are currently available.

As of May 16, 266,225 residents have tested negative for the coronavirus. Recovery statistics are not available at the state or county level.
