Coronavirus Update: County Reports 164 New Cases, Deaths in North Penn Area Near 70

Montgomery County officials announced 164 new COVID-19 cases and 12 additional confirmed deaths on Tuesday afternoon.

Data shows that of the 164 cases reported on Tuesday, 128 occurred in long-term care facilities, leaving a total of 36 new cases reported outside of those facilities. The countywide total now stands at 5,274 confirmed positive cases.

In the North Penn area, Montgomery Township has the most cases with 181 and 20 deaths, followed by Lansdale Borough with 131 and seven deaths, Hatfield Township with 120 and two deaths, Upper Gwynedd Township with 89 and 31 deaths, Towamencin Township with 88 and nine deaths, Hatfield Borough with 19 cases and North Wales Borough with 11 cases.

Total cases in the North Penn area currently stand at 639 and 69 deaths. Cases in the neighboring communities are as follows:

  • Souderton Borough – 62
  • Telford Borough – 25
  • Franconia Township – 59 and seven deaths
  • Lower Salford Township – 54 and one death
  • Skippack Township – 49 and five deaths
  • Worcester Township – 34 and one death
  • Whitpain Township – 98 and four deaths
  • Lower Gwynedd Township – 114 and 14 deaths
  • Horsham Township - 129 and 16 deaths

Totals across the surrounding municipalities currently stand at 624 cases and 48 deaths. As of Tuesday afternoon, the only municipality within the county to not report a positive case is Bryn Athyn.

The countywide death toll from the coronavirus now stands at 429, of which 375 (87%) have come from residents of long-term care and congregate living facilities. Upper Gwynedd Township has the fifth highest amount of deaths in the county at 31.

As of Tuesday afternoon, 93 of the county’s long-term care and congregate living facilities have reported positive cases, including 1,534 positive cases among residents and 564 positive cases among staff members.

A 14-day average of 30 new cases or less per day is one of the primary metrics for Montgomery County moving into the yellow phase of reopening. As of May 12, the 14-day average stands at 100.9, according to county data.

Earlier on Tuesday, Pennsylvania reported 837 new coronavirus cases, bringing the state’s total to 57,991 cases. The state also announced 75 new confirmed deaths, bringing the total to 3,806 across the commonwealth.

In nursing and personal care homes, there are 12,130 resident cases of COVID-19, and 1,724 cases among employees, for a total of 13,854 at 540 distinct facilities in 44 counties. Out of the state’s total deaths, 2,611 have occurred in residents from nursing or personal care facilities.

To date, 3,923 healthcare workers and more than 2,100 food industry workers across the commonwealth have tested positive for the coronavirus. Hospitalization statistics show that 2,187 people are currently hospitalized across the commonwealth, and 44.5% of hospital beds and 38.3% of adult ICU beds are currently available.

As of May 12, 237,989 residents have tested negative for the coronavirus.
