Coronavirus Update: County Reports 73 New Cases, Only 3 Additional Cases in North Penn Area

(Note: there will be no daily update provided on May 10, as the county has stated they will not issue a release or further update their data until May 11.)

Montgomery County officials announced 73 new COVID-19 cases and nine new confirmed deaths on Saturday afternoon, with three new cases being reported in the North Penn area.

Data shows that of the 73 cases reported on Saturday, 26 occurred in long-term care facilities, leaving a total of 47 new cases reported outside of those facilities. The countywide total now stands at 5,010 confirmed positive cases.

In the North Penn area, Hatfield Township has the most cases with 119 and two deaths, followed by Montgomery Township with 115 and 13 deaths, Lansdale Borough with 112 and seven deaths, Towamencin Township with 87 and seven deaths, Upper Gwynedd Township with 86 and 31 deaths, Hatfield Borough with 19 cases and North Wales Borough with 11 cases.

Total cases in the North Penn area currently stand at 549 and 60 deaths. Cases in the neighboring communities are as follows:

  • Souderton Borough – 61
  • Telford Borough – 25
  • Franconia Township – 59 and seven deaths
  • Lower Salford Township – 53 and one death
  • Skippack Township – 45 and five deaths
  • Worcester Township – 33 and one death
  • Whitpain Township – 89 and three deaths
  • Lower Gwynedd Township – 112 and 14 deaths
  • Horsham Township - 129 and 16 deaths

Totals across the surrounding municipalities currently stand at 606 cases and 47 deaths. As of Saturday afternoon, the only municipality within the county to not report a positive case is Bryn Athyn.

The countywide death toll from the coronavirus now stands at 414, of which 336 (81%) have come from residents of long-term care and congregate living facilities. Upper Gwynedd Township has the fourth highest amount of deaths in the county at 31, behind Upper Providence Township with 39, Lower Merion Township with 45 and Springfield Township with 67. 

As of Friday afternoon, 93 of the county’s long-term care and congregate living facilities have reported positive cases, including 1,329 positive cases among residents and 526 positive cases among staff members. Updates to those numbers were not provided on Saturday, as no press conference was held and the information was disseminated via press release.

A 14-day average of 30 new cases or less per day is one of the primary metrics for Montgomery County moving into the yellow phase of reopening. As of May 9, the 14-day average stands at 110.2.

Earlier on Saturday, Pennsylvania reported 1,078 new coronavirus cases, bringing the state’s total to 55,316 cases. The state also announced 72 new confirmed deaths, bringing the total to 3,688 across the commonwealth.

In nursing and personal care homes, there are 11,239 resident cases of COVID-19, and 1,605 cases among employees, for a total of 12,844 at 530 distinct facilities in 44 counties. Out of the state’s total deaths, 2,518 have occurred in residents from nursing or personal care facilities.

To date, 3,685 healthcare workers and more than 2,100 food industry workers across the commonwealth have tested positive for the coronavirus. Hospitalization statistics show that 2,285 people are currently hospitalized across the commonwealth, with 483 of those requiring the use of a ventilator. 45% of hospital beds and 38.5% of adult ICU beds are currently available.

As of May 9, 221,791 residents have tested negative for the coronavirus.
