Coronavirus Update: Lansdale Cases Continue to Increase, North Penn Area at 546 Total Cases

Dr. Valerie Arkoosh, Chair, Montgomery County Board of Commissioners, speaks at a press conference on May 8.

Montgomery County officials announced 101 new COVID-19 cases and 12 new confirmed deaths on Friday afternoon, with nine new cases being reported in the North Penn area.

Data shows that of the 101 cases reported on Friday, 33 occurred in long-term care facilities, leaving a total of 68 new cases reported outside of those facilities. The countywide total now stands at 4,939 confirmed positive cases.

In the North Penn area, Hatfield Township has the most cases with 117 and two deaths, followed by Montgomery Township with 115 and 13 deaths, Lansdale Borough with 111 and seven deaths, Towamencin Township with 87 and seven deaths, Upper Gwynedd Township with 86 and 31 deaths, Hatfield Borough with 19 cases and North Wales Borough with 11 cases.

Totals across the surrounding municipalities currently stand at 596 cases and 47 deaths. As of Friday afternoon, the only municipality within the county to not report a positive case is Bryn Athyn.

The countywide death toll from the coronavirus now stands at 405, of which 334 (82%) have come from residents of long-term care and congregate living facilities. Upper Gwynedd Township has the fourth highest amount of deaths in the county at 31, behind Lower Merion Township with 38, Upper Providence Township with 39 and Springfield Township with 66.

To date, 93 of the county’s long-term care and congregate living facilities have reported positive cases, including 1,329 positive cases among residents and 526 positive cases among staff members. Officials said those numbers may not be reflected in the countywide total, as some residents and staff members of those facilities may hold a permanent address outside of Montgomery County.

A 14-day average of 30 new cases or less per day is one of the primary metrics for Montgomery County moving into the yellow phase of reopening. As of May 8, the 14-day average stands at 111.8.

Earlier on Friday, Pennsylvania reported 1,323 new coronavirus cases, bringing the state’s total to 54,238 cases. The state also announced 200 new confirmed deaths, bringing the total to 3,616 across the commonwealth.

Pennsylvania Secretary of Health Dr. Rachel Levine reiterated that the increase in deaths was a result of data reconciliation across reporting systems, and they do not represent a one-day increase.

In nursing and personal care homes, there are 10,919 resident cases of COVID-19, and 1,542 cases among employees, for a total of 12,461 at 522 distinct facilities in 44 counties. Out of the state’s total deaths, 2,458 have occurred in residents from nursing or personal care facilities.

To date, 3,553 healthcare workers and more than 2,100 food industry workers across the commonwealth have tested positive for the coronavirus. Hospitalization statistics show that 2,700 people are currently hospitalized across the commonwealth, with 507 of those requiring the use of a ventilator. 45% of hospital beds and 38% of adult ICU beds are currently available.

As of May 8, 216,321 residents have tested negative for the coronavirus.

(Editor's note: North Penn Now will only be providing statistics on confirmed coronavirus cases and deaths. We will not be providing statistics on probable cases and deaths, as we have no way to identify which numbers should be adjusted if/when those cases are later removed.)
