Editorial: Wentz Church Leadership Condemns Statements Made by Commissioner Joe Gale

Protesters attend a Black Lives Matter rally at Memorial Park in Lansdale on June 7.

(The following is an editorial submission from Pastor Dale Davis at Wentz’s United Church of Christ.)

The elected leaders of Wentz’s United Church of Christ are shocked and dismayed by the recent statement by Montgomery County Commissioner Joseph C. Gale. We observe his June 1 press release to be inaccurate, deeply offensive and counter to our understanding of Christian faith.

We believe:

  • The Black Lives Matter movement is a rallying force for needed and overdue societal changes, not a “radical left-wing hate group.”
  • Systemic racism is a reality in American society and institutions.
  • There is a deepening awareness that police reform is urgent and necessary.

Our congregation’s members respect the police and the rule of law, and we are grateful for the work and sacrifice of all our first responders. We call on institutions and organizations across our country to deeply examine practices that continue to divide society and harm black lives and to transparently make changes to affirm that black lives matter.

We also call for our leaders to denounce racism, in all its forms.

The congregation of Wentz’s United Church of Christ has been a beacon of hope and healing in Montgomery County for over 250 years. We continue to pray for peaceful, necessary and impactful change.

Signed,

Pastor Dale Davis and members of the 2020 Consistory
