Approximately 100 firefighters responded to a two-alarm blaze at the Red Wing Farm in Hilltown Township on Thursday morning, which left five people injured and destroyed a barn and two tractors.
According to officials, crews were dispatched to the scene around 10:41 a.m. for a report of a fully-involved fire along the 1500 block of Hilltown Pike. According to Hilltown Township Fire Chief Jim Walter, a second alarm was struck for manpower due to the heat, but crews were able to place the fire under control in approximately one hour.
A report by Bob Keeler at the News-Herald indicates that a total of five people were injured at the scene — three firefighters and two farm workers. Keeler’s report states that both workers were taken to hospitals, with one sustaining burns to their arm and the other sustaining a head injury after being head-butted by a large horse. One of the firefighters was also taken to a hospital with unknown injuries, and two other firefighters were treated on-scene for heat-related issues, the report states.
None of the injuries were described as life-threatening, and all of those injured are expected to recover, officials said. Keeler’s report added that more than a dozen horses that were inside of the barn were able to escape without injury.
As a result of the fire, the barn was destroyed along with two tractors. No other buildings were affected, according to a report by Christopher Dornblaser at The Intelligencer. Dornblaser’s report adds that crews remained on scene until approximately 2 p.m., and the cause of the fire remains under investigation by the Bucks County Fire Marshal’s Office.
Responding units included fire service units from Hilltown, Plumstead, Warwick, Midway, Chalfont, Towamencin, Harleysville, Point Pleasant, Plumsteadville, Dublin, Trumbauersville, Silverdale, Sellersville, Perkasie, Doylestown, Souderton, Telford, Fairmount, Hatfield, Horsham, Warrington and Montgomery Township fire companies, as well EMS units from Central Bucks, Grand View, Chal-Brit, Volunteer Medical Service Corps of Lansdale and Plumstead Ambulance, according to reports.
Additionally, members of the Hilltown Township Police Department and North Penn Goodwill were on scene.
Shortly after the scene was cleared, a GoFundMe was launched by Aubrey Lehman to raise money to rebuild the barn. As of Friday morning, it had already raised nearly $8,000 — $5,500 more than the initial goal of $2,500.
