Home Suffers Extensive Damage, One Resident Displaced Following Fire in Montgomery Township

A Tuesday morning fire in Montgomery Township has left one resident displaced and their home extensively damaged.

According to Bill Wiegman, Director of Fire Services for Montgomery Township, first responders were dispatched to the 100 block of Rutledge Court at 8:46 a.m. on July 21 for a report of a residential fire. Wiegman said that initial units arriving to the scene encountered smoke showing from the front and rear second-floor windows, as Montgomery Township Police worked to evacuate the residents of the adjoining townhomes.

Wiegman said that firefighters were able to quickly place the fire under control — successfully preventing it from spreading to the adjoining townhomes — but the home suffered extensive damage and as a result, the homeowner has been displaced.

No injuries were reported at the scene, and the cause of the fire remains under investigation.

Members of the fire service cleared the scene around 10:30 a.m., Wiegman said, and the fire marshal cleared the scene at 1:13 p.m. In addition to the fire department of Montgomery Township and the Montgomery Township Police Department, units from Hatfield, Warrington, North Penn, Upper Gwynedd, Fort Washington, Fairmount, Hartsville, Hilltown and Center Square fire companies assisted at the scene. Additional support was provided by the Volunteer Medical Service Corps of Lansdale.

“The first arriving units did an tremendous job of swiftly extinguishing the fire,” Wiegman said. “We were very fortunate to have so many mutual aid companies on location to assist us, especially with the excessive heat.”

The displaced homeowner is being assisted by the American Red Cross.
