Legendary Lansdale Catholic Football Coach Jim Algeo Sr. Dies at 83

Legendary Lansdale Catholic Football Coach Jim Algeo Sr. has died, nearly two months after the passing of his wife, Mary Margaret ‘Mickey” Algeo.

Algeo coached the Crusaders for 44 years, leading the school to 293 wins, an undefeated season and a state championship. He retired in 2011.

“His coaching accomplishments, impressive as they were, paled in comparison to the positive life-long impact he had on the players, students, members of the LC community and, of course, his children, many of whom followed him into coaching,” said Dick Shearer, president of the Lansdale Historical Society.

Algeo’s daughter, Bridget, recently penned a novel titled “Football Family,” which profiles the life and legacy of Algeo Sr., as well as the rest of the Algeo family.

"Our hearts are broken this morning, but we are greatly comforted by the outpouring of love by so many,” Bridget said, in response to a request for comment. “Both my parents loved Lansdale and felt very blessed to be part of this community. The day our mom showed Dad the tiny classified ad for the LC Football Coach position changed all our lives for the better. We express our deepest gratitude for the prayers, texts, posts, messages, and warm thoughts for our father. He was a rare breed, and we will miss him beyond words."
