Second Teen Injured in Hilltown Crash Released from Hospital, At Home with Family

15-year-old Abigail Boleski receives a warm welcome home from family six weeks after suffering critical injuries in a single-vehicle crash in Hilltown

The second of two teen sisters injured in last month’s single-vehicle crash in Hilltown Township has returned home to her family, following six weeks of hospitalizations and in-patient rehabilitation.

15-year-old Abigail Boleski was released from Good Shepherd Rehabilitation on Thursday, and she has since rejoined her family at their home in Perkasie, according to her mother, Alysia Boleski.

Abigail, along with her sister, Lexi, suffered serious injuries during the morning of Jan. 17, when their vehicle struck a utility pole along the 700 block of South Perkasie Road in Hilltown Township. Both Lexi and Abigail became trapped as a result of the crash, and multiple area fire companies worked to free the teens.

“We have spoken to members of the fire department and emergency medical personnel that were at the scene, and they told us that it is a miracle that [Abigail] is alive and moving,” said Alysia. “The car was pushed in 18 inches on the passenger side, and the door was on top of Abigail to the point they could not see her. Lexi had to tell them that Abigail was there. She is a fighter, and our miracle.”

Once the sisters were freed from the vehicle, Lexi was taken via ambulance to Lehigh Valley Hospital, for treatment of four broken ribs, a broken collar bone, a broken wrist and collapsed and bruised lungs. According to her family, Lexi underwent one surgical procedure and a second may be necessary, but she was released from the hospital on Feb. 2.

Abigail, who was airlifted from the scene to Saint Christopher’s Hospital for Children in critical condition, suffered fractures to her spine, right scapula, pelvis and left occipital bone, along with a severe contusion to the frontal lobe of her brain, a shift of her bladder, lumbar damage and other injuries. She was in the pediatric ICU for more than two weeks, but as she recovered and became more responsive, she was moved to Good Shepherd in the Lehigh Valley for in-patient rehabilitation.

Though the crash currently remains under investigation by the Hilltown Township Police Department and Bucks County Crash Investigation Team, Alysia told North Penn Now that Lexi said she had swerved to avoid a trash can that had blown in front of the vehicle, then lost control and crashed into the utility pole.

Alysia said both teens had bruising patterns on their chests, consistent with them wearing their seatbelts at the time of the crash.

“This was a really bad, near-fatal accident, all because of the wind and a trashcan,” Alysia said. “This has changed our family, and put our own lives into perspective.”

Alysia said that Abigail still has a long road ahead of her, but she said her daughter is a fighter, and up for the challenge of making a recovery and living her life to the fullest.

In the days after the crash, the community rallied around the Boleski family by way of a GoFundMe that has since surpassed its initial goal of raising $20,000 for the family, as well as fundraising efforts from the Pennridge Ice Hockey Club and The Hickory Stick in Perkasie.

Alysia was quick to shed praise on those who organized and contributed to the fundraisers, as well as the police, fire and emergency medical personnel who worked to save her two girls.

“If it wasn’t for them, my daughters wouldn’t be here,” said Alysia. “The community is amazing, and [again], we are truly, truly blessed.”

“The biggest message we’ve taken from this nightmare is to love those close to you and live your life, because you never know when it could change, “ said Alysia. “Do not take anything for granted. Always be careful and know that no one is invincible.”
