One of the first acts that really made an impact on me at The Underground is the indie rock band Athensville. When I was introduced to the world of talent booking and show promotion, I was constantly on the hunt for leads that would turn into callbacks or returned email correspondence. In the beginning, I would occasionally receive inquiries from area bands looking to perform at The Underground and Athensville was one of the first.
I specifically remember an evening when I was at The Underground, during a show, and the full Athensville band stopped in, unplanned, to meet the staff and drop off a CD to listen to. We had a really great time chatting about music, their goals and the mission of The Underground. I booked them on the spot and gave them the first date that worked with their schedule. Since then, we’ve maintained a really great relationship and have hosted them as guests on our Round Guys Radio podcast (click here to listen to their episode) and have seen them open up for Joe Jack Talcum. Athensville is returning this Saturday along with their friends Scott McClatchy and Jeff Pettit.
Fitting with the indie theme this weekend, we’re hosting a really fun singer-songwriters round on Friday featuring three, very influential artists, in the area music scene. Jason Ray (of the popular Phoenixville acoustic duo Girl Science), Laura K (of the always interesting Bitchfork) and John Kemp (of Victor Traps and Khrissy). All three of these musicians have been instrumental to the growth of The Underground over the past few years. They each bring years of experience in songwriting and stories that you’ll be sure to enjoy. Be sure to check out their appearances on our Round Guys Radio podcast!
These local artists are absolutely necessary for the local music scene to thrive. Their passion and dedication translates through their music to create a memorable evening for all who attend. We hope to see you this weekend!
