Woman Accused of Stealing $1,100 in Cold Sore, Allergy Medications from Wegmans

Monica Butler, 35, of Ambler.

An Ambler woman is facing multiple felony charges after she allegedly stole more than $1,100 in cold sore and allergy medications from the Wegmans located at the Montgomery Mall.

According to the criminal complaint, police responded to 804 Bethlehem Pike at 5:15 p.m. on Feb. 5 for a retail theft complaint. Investigators spoke with one of the store’s loss prevention employees, who stated that during the early-morning hours of Jan. 30, a female entered the store and concealed dozens of packages of medication into a Wegmans freezer bag and a black tote bag, the report states.

The items allegedly included:

  • Seven packages of Abreva Cold Sore Medicine
  • Four Abreva Twin Packs
  • Six packages of Xyzal Allergy
  • Five packages of Flonase
  • Four packages of Nasacort Spray
  • Four packages of Claritin
  • Five packages of Allegra 24-Hour Tablets
  • Two packages of Nexium OTC
  • Two packages of Mucinex DM
  • Three additional packages of Claritin

Total value of the items concealed was $1,121.38, police said. Additional merchandise was also concealed, but could not be identified via surveillance footage, the report states.

The female then left the store without paying, according to the complaint. Investigators later identified the female suspect as 35-year-old Monica Butler, of Ambler, the report states.

Butler was subsequently taken into custody on Feb. 19, and arraigned on two felony counts of retail theft and two felony counts of receiving stolen property. Bail was set at $2,500 unsecured, and her next court appearance is a preliminary hearing on March 24 at 11:30 a.m. in front of Magisterial District Judge Andrea Duffy.
