Congressman Brian Fitzpatrick (PA-01) made the following statement regarding the future of the Rockhill Quarry in Sellersville, PA:
“The safety of my constituents is my number one priority, which is why I am calling for the Environmental Protection Agency and the state of Pennsylvania to intervene in mining operations at Rockhill Quarry, and to prevent further activities at the quarry. Before ceasing operations in 2018, the Rockhill Quarry was emitting asbestos into the air and ground, and asbestos was tracked offsite, often traveling miles away from the quarry,” said Fitzpatrick. “The Rockhill Quarry is located in a residential area, with over 11,000 students attending school less than five miles away. This is a public safety issue. I request that any redevelopment of the quarry be suspended until a multi-year independent geologic investigation is conducted by a geologist, to ensure that our children and surrounding environment are safe from the dangers of asbestos.”
In November 2018, Fitzpatrick sent a letter to Pennsylvania Secretary of the Department of Environmental Protection, Patrick McDonnell, regarding various concerns of residents in proximity to the Rockhill Quarry. You can read the 2018 letter here.
In December 2018, Fitzpatrick sent a letter to Governor Tom Wolf requesting that any further redevelopment of the Rockhill Quarry be suspended until a more thorough environmental review can be conducted after asbestos was found on site. You can read the 2018 letter here.
