Montco Chiropractor Accused of Credit Card Fraud in Towamencin

John Kondus, 49, of the 1500 block of Kriebel Road.

A Montgomery County chiropractor who is currently on probation in connection with a 2017 insurance fraud conviction is facing new charges, after he allegedly opened two credit cards in the name of his ex-girlfriend’s daughter.

John Kondus, 49, of Towamencin, has been charged with 16 felony counts of access device fraud, along with two misdemeanor counts of possession of a counterfeit or altered access device, in connection with a recent investigation by the Towamencin Township Police Department.

Kondus is the sole proprietor of Kondus Family Chiropractic located on Creamery Road in Collegeville.

According to the complaint, the victim contacted police on Nov. 17, 2019, to report an identity theft, after her credit monitoring service alerted her to the opening of two credit cards without her knowledge or consent. The first account was opened with Capital One and had a balance of $432.89, and the second account was opened with Merrick Bank and had a balance of $586, the report states.

Investigators learned that eight purchases were made with the Capital One account, with five of the purchases occurring at the Wawa in Skippack Township and one of the purchases occurring at Kondus Family Chiropractic, the report states. Surveillance footage from Wawa showed that Kondus was the person making the purchases, and in one instance, Kondus was wearing a hooded sweatshirt with his name printed on the back of it, police said.

Only two purchases were made on the Merrick Bank account, with one occurring at the same Wawa in Skippack, and the other purchase occurring at Kondus Family Chiropractic, the report states.

In a follow up interview with police, the victim stated that she was a patient at the doctor’s office that shares office space with Kondus Family Chiropractic, but added that she was never a patient of Kondus Family Chiropractic. The victim also stated that her mother’s ex-boyfriend was the owner of Kondus Family Chiropractic, according to the complaint.

When shown images of the suspect, the victim positively identified him as Kondus, as well as his vehicle, police said. Additionally, the mailing address given when applying for the credit cards was Kondus’ home address, the report states.

Charges against Kondus were filed on Feb. 3. He was taken into custody and arraigned by Magisterial District Judge Ed Levine, who set bail at $50,000 unsecured. Kondus was then released from custody, and his next court appearance is a preliminary hearing on Feb. 14 at 11:30 a.m. in front of Judge Levine.

Court records indicate that Kondus was sentenced to five years of probation in June 2017, after pleading guilty to one misdemeanor count of insurance fraud.
