Officials from the Lansdale Borough Parks and Recreation Committee provided an update to the upcoming playground project at Whites Road Park during Wednesday night’s work session meeting.
Committee members approved a $47,118 proposal to have Remington and Vernick Engineers (RVE) prepare the specifications for the project to go out to bid, including survey and administration work, as well as advertising the project for bids. If approved by borough council at their February business meeting, officials said it would take roughly three months to prepare the bid for advertising, and another four to five weeks to award the project.
“This will get us all of the way to awarding the contract,” said Karl Lukens, Lansdale Borough Parks and Rec Director. “This proposal gets us everything we need in a big package to advertise it. Then they will advertise it and recommend a contractor [to perform the work].”
Once the project has been awarded, it will then take another one to two months to install the new playground equipment and complete the project, weather permitting. Lukens stated that the optimistic view for the opening of the playground would be September or October of this year.
“The timeline is slower than we had hoped for,” said Lukens. “I was hoping we could get this done by June, but ideally, we could have a grand opening in October.”
The total cost of the playground project is approximately $535,000, with half of the funding coming by way of a Department of Conservation and Natural Resources (DCNR) grant, and the other half coming from the borough. The $47,118 proposal for RVE would be included in that total and half would be covered by the grant, officials said.
Once the project has been awarded to a contractor, Parks and Rec Committee Chairwoman Mary Fuller said there will be signs placed within Whites Road Park, alerting residents to the upcoming playground overhaul and allowing them to see what the final build will look like.
In the interim, and in preparation for the incoming playground equipment, the ga-ga pit has been removed from the playground area. Lukens said that the ga-ga pit will be moved to the grassy area of Whites Road Pool, giving members and visitors additional things to do.
