North Penn Football Players Read to Students in 16th Annual Reading Super Bowl

More than 70 North Penn High School (NPHS) football players participated in the 16th Annual North Penn Reading Super Bowl that was held throughout each of the 13 elementary schools in the North Penn School District (NPSD) last Wednesday.

The event was held in conjunction with the date of the NFL Super Bowl LIII 2019. Members of the NPHS Football Team volunteered to visit all 13 North Penn School District elementary schools and read to more than 6,400 children in 285 classrooms across the district as part of the reading incentive program.

Each player also had real trading cards highlighting statistics, including their favorite book, to hand out to the students. Reading specialists at the elementary schools chose age-appropriate books for the football players to read to the students. The program aims to foster an interest in reading in the elementary students and allows the high school students to act as role models for literacy.

In 2005, this event began with 30 football players visiting eight elementary schools. Sixteen years later, it is exciting to see how this activity has flourished into every elementary school and reaches out to more than 6,400 elementary-aged children.
