Coronavirus Update: County Reports 477 New Cases, 9 Additional Deaths on Thursday

Montgomery County announced 477 new coronavirus cases and nine additional deaths on Thursday afternoon.

Data shows that of the 477 cases reported on Thursday, 15 cases occurred at long-term care facilities, zero occurred at the county jail and the remaining 462 cases occurred within the community. The countywide total now stands at 28,337 confirmed positive cases.

North Penn Area Update

Below you will find total amount of cases over the last 30 days for the seven municipalities that comprise North Penn School District. The cases, as of Dec. 17, are as follows:

  • Lansdale Borough -- 534 cases and 15 deaths
  • Montgomery Township -- 274 cases and 5 deaths
  • Towamencin Township – 236 cases and 2 deaths
  • Hatfield Township -- 306 cases and 2 deaths
  • Upper Gwynedd -- 196 cases and 1 death
  • Hatfield Borough -- 77 cases and no deaths
  • North Wales Borough -- 21 cases and 1 death

Totals now stand at 1,644 cases and 26 deaths over the last 30 days.

North Penn School District Update

On Dec. 16, North Penn School District reported the following new cases:

  • One student at Gwyn-Nor Elementary

Previous cases within the district, dating from Oct. 30 through Dec. 15, include:

  • Inglewood Elementary – three students and one staff member
  • North Penn High School – three staff members, five students
  • Montgomery Elementary – two staff members, three students
  • Pennbrook Middle School – one staff member, four students
  • Penndale Middle School – four students and one staff member
  • Pennfield Middle School - one student
  • Gwynedd Square Elementary – four staff members and four students
  • Gwyn-Nor Elementary – two students
  • Hatfield Elementary – one student
  • North Wales Elementary – one student
  • York Avenue Elementary – three staff members and two students
  • Bridle Path Elementary – one student
  • Walton Farm Elementary – one student and three staff members
  • North Penn School District – four staff members unassigned to a school
  • Oak Park Elementary – one staff member
  • Kulp Elementary – one student

Update for Neighboring Communities

Cases over the past 30 days in the neighboring communities are as follows:

  • Souderton Borough – 117 cases and 1 death
  • Telford Borough – 49 cases and no deaths
  • Franconia Township – 231 cases and no deaths
  • Lower Salford Township – 213 cases and no deaths
  • Skippack Township – 241 cases and 3 deaths
  • Worcester Township – 167 cases and 7 deaths
  • Whitpain Township – 207 cases and 1 death
  • Lower Gwynedd Township – 124 cases and no deaths
  • Horsham Township – 318 cases and 4 deaths

Totals across the surrounding municipalities over the last 30 days are 1,667 cases and 16 deaths.

Montgomery County Update

The countywide death toll from the coronavirus now stands at 951.

In the past seven days, there have been a total of 3,057 new cases reported in Montgomery County, which is a decrease of 196 cases compared to the previous week. Additionally, the county’s seven-day PCR Test Positivity Rate currently stands at 12.1% as of Dec. 10.

According to the Montgomery County COVID-19 Dashboard, and as of Dec. 16, there are currently 537 county residents who are hospitalized due to the coronavirus, of which 55 require the use of a ventilator. (Data for Dec. 17 was unavailable at the time of publishing.)

A breakdown of cases by hospital is not available. Montgomery County is now averaging 462.8 new cases per day over the most recent 14-day period.

State Level Update

Earlier on Thursday, Pennsylvania reported a total of 9,966 new cases, which brings the state’s total to 529,335 confirmed positive cases.

The state also announced that there were 224 additional confirmed deaths, bringing the total to 13,392 confirmed deaths across the commonwealth.

In nursing and personal care homes, there are 45,858 resident cases of COVID-19, and 8,411 cases among employees, for a total of 54,269 at 1,418 distinct facilities in all 67 counties. Out of the state’s total deaths, 7,871 have occurred in residents from nursing or personal care facilities.

To date, 17,326 healthcare workers have tested positive for the coronavirus. Hospitalization statistics show that 6,209 people are currently hospitalized across the commonwealth, of which 745 require the use of a ventilator. 14.1% of medical/surgical beds and 14.4% of adult ICU beds are currently available.

Statewide percent positivity for the week of Dec. 4 through Dec. 10 stood at 16.2%.

As of Dec. 17, 3,101,764 tests have been negative for the coronavirus. About 60% of those who have tested positive in Pennsylvania have since recovered, leaving an estimated 211,734 active cases across the state.
