Woman Rescued, Airlifted in Two-Alarm Fire at Gwynedd Club on Sunday Afternoon

An Upper Gwynedd Township woman was hospitalized after firefighters rescued her from a second-floor fire in her residence at Gwynedd Club on Sunday afternoon.

Crews were dispatched to the intersection of Kearney Drive and Arbour Court at 12:29 p.m. on Dec. 13 for a report of a residential fire. Dispatch notes indicated that multiple callers reported seeing flames and heavy smoke coming from the second floor of the residence.

Upon arrival, firefighters and a neighbor attempted to rescue a resident inside of the burning unit, but smoke and heat conditions pushed them back. After additional crews arrived, they were able to successfully remove the victim — an unidentified woman — from the unit, according to Upper Gwynedd Township Fire Marshal Jeff Tomczak.

Multiple sources at the scene reported that emergency medical personnel were seen providing CPR to the victim, who was then transported from the scene via ambulance to Abington Lansdale Hospital, and subsequently airlifted from Lansdale Hospital to another hospital in Philadelphia for treatment of her injuries. The victim’s condition is currently unknown.

Tomczak said a second alarm was struck due to the type of building construction and initial responders having to rescue the victim. The fire was placed under control approximately 30 minutes after arrival, and Tomczak said the fire was contained to the one unit, with minor smoke and water damage extending to the downstairs portion of the unit.

Temporarily displaced residents are staying with family or friends, Tomczak said. The cause of the fire has been listed as “undetermined,” though Tomczak said that designation was subject to change pending new information.

The Upper Gwynedd Township Fire Department was assisted at the scene by units from the Upper Gwynedd Police Department, North Wales Borough Police, North Penn Fire Company, Fairmount Fire Company, Colmar Fire Company, Towamencin Fire Company, Worcester Fire Department, Lower Providence Fire Department, Hatfield Fire Company, Centre Square Fire Department, Fire Department of Montgomery Township, Harleysville Fire Company and Volunteer Medical Service Corps of Lansdale.
