An elderly man was hospitalized on Wednesday night after being struck by a vehicle near the William Penn Inn in Lower Gwynedd.
Police said they were initially called to the area at 6:55 p.m. on Dec. 9 for a report of a suspicious male walking in the middle of the roadway at the intersection of Sumneytown and Dekalb pikes. However, one minute later police received a second call that the male had been struck by a vehicle.
Upon arrival to the scene, police determined that a 71-year-old male was struck by a Kia Optima that was driven by a 50-year-old female. Police added that the victim was wearing dark clothing and nothing reflective at the time he was struck.
PennSTAR medevac was called in to airlift the victim to the hospital, however the helicopter experienced mechanical failure after arriving at the scene. Instead, the victim was transported from the scene via ambulance to Abington Main Hospital, where he remains at this time. Police said the hospital would not release the man’s current condition, beyond confirming he was admitted.
The scene was cleared at 8:05 p.m. Lower Gwynedd Police were assisted at the scene by units from the Upper Gwynedd Police Department, North Penn Volunteer Fire Company, Wissahickon Fire Company, Volunteer Medical Service Corps of Lansdale and Ambler Ambulance.
The driver of the striking vehicle will not be charged, police said.
