Rep. Malagari, Sen. Collett Announce $300K Traffic Safety Grant for Hatfield Township

(The following is a combined release from the offices of state Rep. Steve Malagari and state Sen. Maria Collett.)

State Rep. Steve Malagari (D., Montgomery) and state Sen. Maria Collett (D., Montgomery) today announced that Hatfield Township received an Automated Red Light Enforcement grant to help improve traffic safety.

Information on the project includes:

  • Hatfield Township – $300,000 to improve accessibility and safety at four existing traffic signals in alignment with a recently completed sidewalk connections plan.

Malagari penned a letter in support of the grant, stating that current traffic patterns make it difficult for Hatfield Volunteer Fire Company members to respond to calls.

“These funds will go toward the installation of two traffic signals that would flash to alert oncoming motorists that a truck is entering or exiting the fire company,” Malagari said. “This would improve safety for motorists and volunteer firefighters, while also cutting down on the response times of these first responders.”

Pennsylvania’s ARLE program aims to improve safety at signalized intersections by providing automated enforcement at locations where data shows red-light running has been an issue.

"Good infrastructure and traffic safety are vital components to keeping our communities great places to live, work, shop and play,” Senator Collett explained. “Continuing to fund projects like this will be critical to revitalizing our local economy after such a difficult year.”

Grant funding is supplied by fines from red light violations at 31 intersections in Philadelphia. State law specifies that projects improving safety, enhancing mobility and reducing congestion can be considered for funding. Municipalities submitted 123 applications, totaling almost $39.5 million in requests.
