Hilltown Township Police have announced the arrest of a Phillipsburg, NJ man who allegedly received an advance payment in excess of $19,000 for a home remodeling project and then failed to provide any services.
Jared Hummer, 37, has been charged with felony counts of making a false statement to induce an agreement for home improvement services, receiving advance payment for services and fails to perform, misrepresentation of contractor identifying information, deceptive business practices, theft by deception and receiving stolen property in connection with the investigation.
Police said they were contacted by a resident regarding a home improvement project along the 100 block of Tall Oaks Drive, and the resident said that in October 2019, they had entered into an agreement with Hummer’s company, Veteran’s Home Improvements. The report states that the scope of the work to be performed on the home included the replacement of 23 windows, a bathroom remodel and additional improvements to a second bathroom.
Investigators learned that Hummer was paid an advance in excess of $19,000, however the resident never received the replacement windows, and the remaining work was left incomplete, the report states. Police said the resident requested a refund of the advance, but it was never received.
It was also uncovered during the investigation that Hummer’s Pennsylvania Home Improvement Contractor (PA HIC) had expired, police said.
Hummer was arraigned on Dec. 3 by Magisterial District Judge Regina Armitage, who set bail at $250,000 unsecured. Hummer was then released from custody, and his next court appearance is a preliminary hearing on Jan. 19, 2021 in front of Judge Armitage.
(All suspects and defendants are innocent until proven guilty. This story was compiled using court records and the affidavit of probable cause.)
