A Lansdale man is behind bars after he allegedly shouted racial slurs and attempted to attack police officers who were attempting to assist him up from a fall on Saturday afternoon.
Phillip McCabe, 53, has been charged with aggravated assault, simple assault, terroristic threats, ethnic intimidation, endangering the welfare of children and harassment in connection with the incident.
Police said they were dispatched to the 700 block of Willow Street at 5:18 p.m. on August 15 for a report of a fall victim, and upon arrival, they located a heavily intoxicated McCabe lying on the floor after falling asleep in a chair. As responding officers attempted to render aid, police said that McCabe became argumentative, uncooperative and aggressive towards police and emergency medical personnel.
First responders continued to try to assist McCabe, who stood up and allegedly began shouting racial slurs at a black female officer, police said. McCabe then took an aggressive stance towards first responders, at which point an officer deployed their Taser and brought the confrontation to the end without further incident. McCabe was then taken into custody.
The following day, McCabe was arraigned before Magisterial District Judge Paul Leo, who set bail at $25,000 cash. McCabe was then remanded to county jail after failing to post bail.
Court records indicate that McCabe was arrested multiple times in Montgomery County since 2004. His next court appearance is a preliminary hearing on Aug. 26 at 10 a.m. in front of Magisterial District Judge Ed Levine.
(All suspects and defendants are innocent until proven guilty. This story was compiled using court records and the affidavit of probable cause.)
