Montgomery Township Announces new Stipend for Volunteer Emergency Services Personnel

The Montgomery Township Board of Supervisors unanimously voted to approve a resolution titled “Volunteer Service Tax Credit” during the live-streamed board of supervisors meeting on April 13.

The resolution will allow volunteer emergency services personnel to receive a stipend, in the form of a flat fee, for their service. This year’s stipend payment from the township was $8,400 to account for 28 active members.

Prior to the approval of the Volunteer Service Tax Credit, the board of supervisors unanimously voted to abolish the ordinance that gave volunteer emergency services personnel an amount based on a formula from paid taxes.

“The board of supervisors was pleased to be able to take this action to improve upon the measures which were initially put in place by the board in 2019,” said Tanya Bamford, Chairwoman of the Board of Supervisors. “This new resolution allows us to more equitably express our appreciation for the volunteer first responders who reside in the township. The distribution of these funds is also timely in light of the current crisis. Our hope is that these funds provide a ray of light during an otherwise gloomy period for these hardworking members of our community.”

“The volunteer service tax credit was greatly appreciated by the members of the FDMT who dedicate countless hours responding to emergencies, engaging in training, and performing administrative duties,” said Bill Wiegman, Director of Fire Services. “They are thankful for the new stipend and the recognition from the board of supervisors. We are very fortunate in Montgomery Township to have a group of highly trained and dedicated volunteers.”

The Montgomery Township Board of Supervisors Meetings take place at 7 p.m. on the second and fourth Monday of every month. The next meeting will be held on April 27 at 7 p.m., and will again be live-streamed.
