Upper Gwynedd Woman Dies From Coronavirus, Cases Increase by 71 Across County

Montgomery County officials announced more than 70 new COVID-19 cases on Friday, with 10 of them occurring in the North Penn area and 15 more reported in the neighboring municipalities.

In the North Penn area, Montgomery Township has the most cases with 16, followed by Upper Gwynedd Township with 12, Hatfield Township with 12, Lansdale Borough with 10, Towamencin Township with nine, North Wales Borough with one and Hatfield Borough with one—their first positive case.

Additionally, the local area has its first death due to the coronavirus—an 87-year-old female from Upper Gwynedd Township.

Cases in the neighboring communities continued to increases as well, with 15 new cases announced on Friday. The totals are as follows:

  • Souderton Borough – 10
  • Telford Borough – three
  • Franconia Township – six
  • Lower Salford Township – 11
  • Skippack Township – 10
  • Worcester Township – 14
  • Whitpain Township – 19
  • Lower Gwynedd Township – 12
  • Horsham Township -19 and two deaths

As of Friday afternoon, cases in Montgomery County have increased to 778 total across 56 of the county's 62 municipalities. The coronavirus has also claimed the lives of 15 Montgomery County residents across 10 municipalities.

Earlier on Friday, Pennsylvania reported their highest one-day total of new coronavirus cases at 1,404, bringing the statewide total to 8,420 cases across 63 counties. The coronavirus death toll also increased by 12 since yesterday, bringing the total to 102 deaths across the commonwealth.

“The continued rise in cases combined with our increasing deaths from COVID-19 reflects the seriousness of this situation,” Levine said. “We need everyone to listen to the orders in place and to stay calm, stay home and stay safe. We know that these prolonged mitigation effects have been difficult for everyone, but it is essential that everyone follows these orders and does not go out unless they absolutely must.”

Of those who have tested positive, 852 have been hospitalized, 241 have required treatment in an intensive-care unit and 147 have required the use of a ventilator. 12-percent of the state’s nursing homes are currently reporting at least one positive case, and 419 healthcare workers have tested positive for the COVID-19 coronavirus.

In total, 53,695 residents have tested negative for the virus.
