Registration is now open for Discover Lansdale’s First Friday Chili Cook-Off, scheduled for Oct. 4 from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m.
Space is limited to 15 contestants, and registration will be on a first-come, first-served basis. Participants must bring one gallon of their chili to the drop-off location at the West Main Lot—intersection of Main and Susquehanna—by 6 p.m. on the day of the event. Registration is open to both businesses and residents.
Official rules are as follows:
• Chili is to be brought “ready-to-eat.” Each contestant is solely responsible to make sure that no ingredient is undercooked and/or that there is no risk of foodborne illness.
• The cooking period must occur within 24 hours of the event. Chili must be brought and kept in a crock pot or other warming container that will be placed for entry by 6 p.m. Chili will then be transferred to serving warming pans.
• Each contestant must cook a gallon (four quarts) of chili (one regular crock pot).
• Contest will be located at the First Friday Beer Garden, located in the West main Lot at the intersection of West Main Street and Susquehanna Avenue.
• Discover Lansdale will provide spoons and cups for serving to the general public. And, of course, napkins.
• Judging will be done by the general public between 6:30 p.m. and 8:30 p.m. People will taste and vote for those two hours (unless we run out of chili).
• First place award will be presented at 8:45 p.m.
Judging will be blind, with each entry being assigned a number. After guests have sampled all of the chilis, they’ll write down their favorite number and place it into a box. If the chili runs out, the competition will end and votes will be tallied at that time. The winner will be announced at 8:45 p.m.
To enter, send an email to [email protected] with the following information:
• Name
• Address
• Phone number
• Name of chili
• Chili heat rating (1 is mild, 2 is medium, 3 is hot)
The annual Discover Lansdale Chili Cook-Off is one of the primary features of the October Fall Harvest First Friday festival. In addition to the chili cook-off, there will be a scarecrow decorating contest, live entertainment, food trucks, two DJ’s, early trick-or-treating and other autumn-themed activities. A second article will be published early next week, details the rest of the event.
