(Editor’s note: the following is a press release from Towamencin Township.)
Towamencin Township has had to close Rittenhouse Road between Old Forty Foot Road and Clemens Road for the second time in two months, due to significant damage to a stone culvert caused by a vehicle hitting it at a high rate of speed in the early morning hours of Friday, September 20, 2019.
Structural engineers will evaluate the additional damage and integrity of the structure. Based on initial observations, it is unknown at this time whether the road will be able to reopen before a complete replacement is completed sometime in 2020.
In mid-July of this year, Towamencin Township had to close a portion of Rittenhouse Road due to damages caused by a truck to the stone arch bridge culvert on Rittenhouse Road approximately 200 feet northwest of the intersection with Old Forty Foot Road in Towamencin Township, Montgomery County, PA. The vehicle collided with the west side-wall of the bridge culvert, causing it to collapse into the stream. Following the July accident, the Township was able to re-open Rittenhouse Road during the week of July 29th as one-way only from Old Forty Foot Road to Clemens Road.
