Members of multiple area fire departments responded to a report of a strong gas odor in North Wales on Saturday afternoon.
According to Steve McGlynn at the North Penn Fire Company, crews were dispatched around 2:15 p.m. for a report of a strong gas odor along the 300 block of Washington Avenue.
“The odor was determined to be originating from under a utility hole cover in the street,” said McGlynn. “The primary source was located, and crews were able to successfully mitigate the emergency.”
McGlynn added that the fire department is unaware of the direct cause of the odor, and directed further questions to the North Wales Water Authority. As the scene was active, sources told North Penn Now that there were initial readings of 100 ppm (parts per million) of hydrogen sulfide in the area, which climbed as high as 200 ppm a few minutes later.
North Penn Now has reached out to the North Wales Water Authority to determine the cause of the odor, as well as to confirm the readings. We will update this article once we receive a response.
North Penn Fire Company was assisted at the scene by the Upper Gwynedd Township Fire Department, Fairmount Fire Company, Volunteer Medical Service Corps of Lansdale, Montgomery County Hazmat, PECO, the North Wales Water Authority and the sewer department.
In total, crews were on location for roughly two hours prior to the scene being cleared.
