Lansdale Police Promote Four to Sergeant

The Lansdale Borough Police Department officially has four new sergeants, following a promotion and swearing-in ceremony that was held during last night’s Lansdale Borough Council business meeting.

Amidst a backdrop of family members and colleagues, officers Amanda North, Dan Gallagher, Jeff Mallozzi and Steve Owens were sworn in by Mayor Garry Herbert. After taking their oath, each had a family member pin their new sergeant badge to their dress uniform, before shaking hands with Chief Mike Trail and then retreating back into the crowd.

“These officers did really well to distinguish themselves, and I’m very proud of them,” said Trail.

Trail said the promotion process was both lengthy and thorough, and he was proud to see that 18 members of the agency put in and sat for the promotional exam.

“It was a very competitive process, our officers studied hard, scored very well and I’m happy with the outcome,” said Trail. “I’m very proud of who was ultimately able to get promoted, but all of the officers are great and I have no doubt that any of them could have succeeded in that role.”

All four of the new sergeants will now be moved into supervisory roles within the patrol division, Trail said.

“What we did was we filled all of the patrol supervisor spots, which had been vacant for the last two years,” said Trail.

Two of the new sergeants—Sgt. Steve Owens and Sgt. Jeff Mallozzi—are longtime members of the Lansdale Borough Police Department. Trail said Owens and Mallozzi have been with the department for more than 20 years, and both have most recently served in acting-supervisor roles for the patrol division. Both Owens and Mallozzi are active in the department’s firearms training unit, and Owens also serves as the department’s quartermaster, while Mallozzi serves as an accident reconstructionist.

Sgt. Amanda North initially joined the department as a part time police officer several years ago, but was appointed to a full-time role in Feb. 2017. At the time, her field training officers praised her for her quick development on the job, and said they were extremely proud to see her in a full-time position.

North has since worked in the patrol division, and will now serve as a supervisor in the same unit.

For Sgt. Dan Gallagher, who recently returned to duty after being stabbed in the shoulder during an incident in Richland Township over the summer, the promotion represents a move from one division to another. Prior to the promotion, Gallagher worked within the Community Services Unit alongside Sgt. Richard Bubnis. In addition to working myriad events, Gallagher’s primary focus was serving as the department’s motor carrier enforcement officer.

Gallagher will now move to the patrol division, where he will serve as a supervisor.
