The Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office is warning residents about a new phone scam which appears to come from a legitimate county phone number.
According to the release, residents have been receiving the scam calls from someone with a southern accent claiming to be from the sheriff’s office. The calls originate from a “spoofed” number that appears to come from the county, but then the caller either asks or leaves a voicemail requesting a return call to 610-540-7168, which is not a registered number for the county or the sheriff’s office.
The sheriff’s office is asking residents to not return the calls. Additionally, anyone who receives these calls is asked to notify law enforcement. It is also recommended that residents increase their phone security by utilizing the National Do Not Call Registry, which can be accessed by clicking here.
The nature of the phone scam was not released.
