Attempted Theft Thwarted by Loss Prevention Officer at Marshalls in Airport Square

A Rosalyn man has been accused of attempting to steal merchandise from the Marshall’s Department Store in Airport Square, only to have his effort thwarted by the store’s loss prevention officer.

According to the criminal complaint, Montgomery Township Police were dispatched to the 800 block of Bethlehem Pike on Sept. 27 at 2:46 p.m. for a report of a theft in progress. Upon arrival, police spoke with the store’s loss prevention officer, who stated that she observed a male—later identified as 24-year-old Wade Weldon—selecting multiple active-wear items and placing them into a black canvas bag, the report states.

Weldon then walked towards the exit without paying, but was stopped by the loss prevention officer, who requested that he return the unpaid merchandise, according to the report. Weldon then allegedly grabbed the woman and pushed her out of the way, but the she was able to grab the bag during the struggle and recovered the would-be-stolen merchandise, according to the report.

Weldon then fled the area, police said. Total value of the merchandise was $109.93, according to the report.

As a result of the incident, Weldon has been charged with one felony count of robbery-taking property by force, as well as misdemeanor charges of retail theft and receiving stolen property, and a summary charge of harassment.

Weldon was taken into custody on Oct. 26 and later arraigned by Magisterial District Judge Andrea Duffy, who set bail at $25,000 cash. He was then remanded to the Montgomery County Correctional Facility after failing to post bail.

His next court appearance is a preliminary hearing on Nov. 5 at 10 a.m. in front of Judge Duffy.
