Manna on Main Street Wins Philabundance Hunger Hero Award

To celebrate Hunger Action Month in September, Philabundance held its first-annual agency appreciation brunch to celebrate its community partners’ hard work feeding neighbors in need. The Hunger Heroes brunch included an award ceremony to honor the eight most outstanding agency partners for work that distinguished them in the fight against hunger.

Among those eight was Lansdale’s Manna on Main Street, who received the “Choice Pantry Hero” award for their work in the fight against hunger. Britt Peterson, who serves as the Food Resource Director for Manna on Main Street, was presented with the award on Sept. 18, along with a proclamation from Congressman Brian Fitzpatrick’s office and a folded American flag that once flew over the United States Capitol.

“We are so grateful to be recognized by Philabundance for these efforts,” said Peterson. “The new inventory system we now have in place, which allows our community to shop online as well as in person, is a culmination of several years of hard work by volunteers and staff. The reward we are now seeing is the ability to reach more people in need, including the seniors of North Penn.”

“This award is such an honor,” added Susan O’Neil, Market Manager for Manna. “It is a privilege to be part of this organization, and to work with our volunteers and donors to distribute 482,394 pounds of food in Manna’s Market.”

Other award winners include:

  • Michael     Bennett, Upper Room Missionary Baptist Church, Philadelphia, PA 19138
  • Ariel     Ressler MacNeill, Nationalities Service Center, Philadelphia, PA 19107
  • Marlene     Trice, Kitchen of Love, Philadelphia, PA 19150
  • Clarice     & Maurice Smith, Mt. Zion CME, Sharon Hill, PA 19079
  • Jeff     Truax, Mid-Atlantic States Career and Education Center, Pennsville, NJ     08070
  • Carol     Vidal, Kennett Area Community Service, Kennett Square, PA 19348
  • Gregory     Wright, Edward Gideon School, Philadelphia, PA 19121

“The agencies we work with are the lifeblood of our network,” said Glenn Bergman, Executive Director of Philabundance. “Thanks to them, we are able to collectively distribute more than 28 million pounds of food a year in the Delaware Valley. I am humbled by the work agencies do, and I thank them for their commitment.”
