Health Inspectors Receive Complaint of Animal Being Butchered at Popeyes Chicken in Hatfield

Inspectors with the Montgomery County Department of Health executed an unscheduled inspection of Popeyes Chicken in Hatfield Township on Friday morning, after receiving a complaint from the public regarding an animal being butchered in an employee area.

In a now-viral video which made the rounds through Facebook, Twitter and Snapchat over the weekend, a four-legged animal with a slit cut through its abdomen is clearly visible on a table in an employee-only area. According to the report from the inspection, that animal was in fact a goat, and it was being butchered for personal use.

Under the portion of the report labeled “Inspection Comments,” the inspector said the following:

Inspection conducted today upon receiving a customer related complaint. At time of inspection facility manager stated that on 11/13/19 a goat purchased from an approved supplier was being butchered in facility for employee personal use. Facility did provide paperwork that lamb was from an approved source at time of inspection. No evidence of lamb was observed in facility at time of inspection and all areas appeared to have been cleaned and sanitized. Facility was instructed that lamb cannot be butchered in facility for personal use of employees. Failure to comply may result in further legal actions.

In total, the impromptu inspection found 13 violations, including seven of which were deemed “risk violations.” (Click here to view the entire inspection report)

The video, which was filmed at 1719 North Broad Street in Hatfield Township, expressed outrage at the animal being butchered in the open; a sentiment that was widely shared by those who viewed it on the various social media platforms.

On Saturday evening and again on Sunday, North Penn Now reached out to the Hatfield location and corporate office for Popeyes seeking comment, but we have not yet received a response at this time. Should we receive a response, we will update this article to reflect their comments.
