Albertsons Companies has filed a WARN notice with the Pennsylvania Department of Labor and Industry, announcing the closure of their Hatfield Township facility and the layoffs of 56 employees scheduled for later this month.
The facility, located at 2323 Koffel Road, serves as one of Albertsons ‘Plated’ Fulfillment Centers. It will close of Nov. 27, according to the filing.
When reached for comment by North Penn Now, Albertsons stated that they are making a strategic shift with the Plated brand, from a dinner-based subscription service to a comprehensive in-house culinary brand.
“Because the Plated subscription service will be phased out at the end of November, the office and fulfillment centers that support subscriptions will close,” said Christine Wilcox, Vice President of Communications, Public Affairs and Education for Albertsons Companies.
In their press release, Albertsons said that the decision to formally bring Plated into the company’s lineup of Own Brands came after extensive testing of the meal kits’ in-store performance in its Safeway stores in Northern California. The company found that shoppers who purchase Plated products are more likely to have families and have a larger basket than the average shopper.
“Our vision for Plated includes an expanded set of products that goes far beyond a dinner-based solution and into a comprehensive in-house culinary brand,” said Geoff White, Executive Vice President and Chief Merchandising Officer for Albertsons. “With a broader scope of offerings, we see Plated solving customer demands around convenience, lifestyle, and cooking experience, while adding yet another layer of interest to our in-store journey.”
North Penn Now has requested additional information regarding whether or not employees will be given severance, or if they will have an opportunity to stay on with the company in a different role. We will update this article when we receive a response.
