Only one year after Transformco purchased all assets of the Sears Holdings Corporation out of bankruptcy, they have announced that 96 Sears and Kmart locations will permanently shutter their doors in February 2020.
Among the list is the Sears location at the Montgomery Mall, which will begin a Going Out of Business Sale on Dec. 2, 2019.
“We have been working hard to position Transformco for success by focusing on our competitive strengths and pruning operations that have struggled due to increased competition and other factors,” said the parent company, via press release. “As part of this process, we have made the difficult but necessary decision to streamline our operations and close 96 Sears and Kmart stores.”
Sears Home Services and Sears Hometown stores will be unaffected by the closures, the release states. In the past 15 years, Sears and Kmart have closed more than 3,500 stores, according to a report by USA Today, which adds that 250,000 jobs have also been lost over that same period.
The closure is another hit for the Montgomery Mall area, which has seen closures in TGI Fridays, Chili’s and Charlotte Russe, and financial struggles for fashion retailer Forever 21.
