Cosplay Causes Consternation, School Lockout in Hatfield

An errant knight caused a school-day disruption Thursday morning in Hatfield.

An emergency lockout was instituted around 10:30 a.m. at Hatfield Elementary and Pennfield Middle School in Hatfield Township after an anonymous report that a suspicious person — dressed in medieval garb — was spotted in the area.

The report was first filed via the Neighbors app, a new software linkup from the Ring Doorbell company connecting home security cameras and their owners to communities and law enforcement.

A warning of a large middle-age man walking by in armor and carrying a mace was posted.

According to Hatfield Township Police Sgt. Jeffrey Boyd, the initial report came into Lansdale Police Department, who forwarded the warning after determining the report came from the area of Hertford Drive in Hatfield.

As a precautionary measure, Hatfield Police instituted an emergency lockout at the two schools in the area of the complaint.

Several minutes later, an updated posting on Neighbors clarified that the armored offender was actually cosplaying — costuming himself as a character apparently named "Mordekaiser” from the PC fantasy multiplayer battle game "League of Legends.”

Neither the poster nor the player were identified.

After determining there was no threat, the lockout was lifted at Pennfield and Hatfield at about 10:53 a.m., a school district spokesperson confirmed.
