Lansdale officials have announced that recreational fires and outdoor fireplaces are permitted for use within the borough.
The announcement comes on the heels on public confusion regarding the fire code, and the legality of fire pits and outdoor fireplaces. Prior to the announcement, many borough residents believed that outdoor burning of any type was prohibited.
According to the release, chiminea, metal ring, stone/brick surrounds, and outdoor fireplaces are approved for outdoor usage, but must be a minimum of 15 feet from any structure or combustible material. Containers must be used in accordance with the manufacturers instructions, as well as the 2015 International Fire Code, the release states.
Borough residents are permitted to burn clean, seasoned and dry firewood, but the burning of leaves, grass, trash or other materials is prohibited. The release states that recreational fires must be constantly supervised, until fully extinguished by a 4A-rated extinguisher, dirt, sand, water barrel or garden hose.
The borough also asks that residents take proper precautions, check wind conditions prior to lighting any fire, and be mindful of their neighbors being negatively impacted by the exposure to smoke.
