Lansdale Police To Host Autism Awareness Event

Next week, the Lansdale Police Department will host an Autism Awareness Event.

The event will take place on May 29 from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. at the Lansdale Municipal Complex. The event is free and open to all ages.

The event will feature interactions with members of the Lansdale Police Department, as well as training from an instructor from the PA Autism Services, Education, Resources, and Training (ASERT) at 7 p.m., so that those affected by autism and their family and friends can learn how to interact with police.

The department will be handing out optional emergency contact forms, which are used if someone with autism comes in contact with police but they are non-verbal or have other needs. The contact form will be used to contact someone who can assist the person with autism through the situation.

According to Lansdale Police Detective Nick Oropeza, this is the department’s first event of this kind, but they have received training from ASERT earlier this month

“This is an event to help start the conversation between people with autism, their families and law enforcement regarding safety and awareness in a positive setting,” said Oropeza.
