It has been six months since Lansdale officials sought out congressional help in dealing with the myriad problems that residents have raised over the last several years. Since then, Congressman Brian Fitzpatrick and Mayor Garry Herbert have worked in tandem with the United States Postal Service to identify and eliminate the issues, and restore mail delivery to a mostly error free state.
During the Lansdale Borough Council meeting on Wednesday night, Herbert provided the public with an update.
“Things have improved. I’ve received several emails and calls from people who were previously having issues, and now they’ve either been corrected or they are happening at a much lower rate,” said Herbert. “That being said, there are still some lingering issues regarding slow delivery, late delivery and wrong delivery that are still going on.”
Herbert and Fitzpatrick have had several meetings with the local postmaster over the last few months, addressing resident complaints and finding solutions to getting the service back on track. Currently, the most pressing issue is a reduced staff at the post office, according to Herbert.
“Frankly, the staff levels are down, but they are working on rectifying that and finding quality people to come in and deliver the mail,” said Herbert. “It’s been a slow process of them getting back to full staff, but you have to find people that want to deliver the mail. As we get high-quality people in there, the issues should reduce in frequency.”
Herbert said that he will continue having the regularly scheduled meetings with the postmaster to address errors and complaints as they arise. For those residents who are still experiencing issues with mail delivery, Herbert encourages them to contact the postmaster directly at 215-412-4983.
“If there is no reply, please reach out to myself via my email ([email protected]) or Congressman Fitzpatrick, and we will reach out and discuss the issue in a timely manner,” said Herbert.
“I think that we can get this problem under wraps,” Herbert added. “It’s just a matter of time. We are far better today than we were six months ago.”
