North Wales is in the midst of celebrating the borough’s 150th anniversary. Though some events have already taken place, there are many more coming up over the spring and summer months.
The celebration kicked off in February. So far, the festivities have included a kickoff dinner ball, a vendor bingo fundraiser and a flapjack breakfast.
On May 18, the borough is hosting the Celebrate North Wales event. This will include a steam train that will be giving rides. The tickets for the rides are sold out, but people are welcome to come out and see the train as it comes through. The fire company will shut down the roads so that those who are not riding can have a safe photo opportunity to get pictures of the train.
Those who ride the train are invited to go to local businesses, which will have special discounts and promotions for the 150th celebration. Riders will receive a pamphlet that shows what the buildings looked like in previous years, and if you find the location, you get the discount or promotion.
The North Penn Volunteer Fire Company will be a commemorative store that will be open all day on May 18. They will be selling the North Wales cookbook, the 150th Commemorative Booklet, water bottles, ornaments and t-shirts. The fire company will also have additional items for sale. Those who are unable to make it to the event but are interested in purchasing one or more of these items can do so at North Wales Borough Hall during their normal business hours.
There will also be an evening celebration on May 18, beginning at 5 p.m. It will include a food truck festival, beer garden, fireworks, kids’ games, a live band and a DJ. The rain date for this part of the celebration is May 19.
Below is a list of the upcoming events that are a part of the 150th Celebration:
-May 18: Celebrate North Wales will take place at Weingartner Park at 5 p.m. There will be a food truck festival, music and games. There will also be a fireworks show at 9 p.m.
-June 1: The North Wales 2nd Chance Yard Sale will take place at the North Wales Elementary School parking lot. The cost is $20 for a 10 ft. spot, and you provide the table.
-Aug.20: Incorporation Day, which is the official anniversary of the incorporation of North Wales, will be celebrated by ringing bells and blowing whistles at 6:30 p.m. Church bells and police and fire sirens will join in on the noise making. At 6:45 p.m., the Montgomery County Jazz Band will perform in Weingarner Park.
-Sep. 14: The 150th Anniversary Parade is the grand finale of the 150th Anniversary celebration. Notable participants in the parade include the Philadelphia Mummers Ferko String Band, the Reilly Raiders Drum and Bugle Corps from Willow Grove, the Mackay Pipe Band from Bethlehem and the North Penn Marching Knights.
Despite the busyness in organizing the celebration events, Christine Hart, the North Wales Borough Manager and community liaison for the 150th Celebration, appreciates all of the hard work that is going into making everything go well.
“It really is exciting to be a part of something and to say ‘Wow, I was a part of the 150th,’” said Hart. “Not many people can say they were right in the middle of it when it was being planned. I am very proud to be the manager and I’m hoping for great success, not only this year, but for many years to come.”
