North Penn School District was named one of the “Best Communities for Music Education” from the National Association of Music Merchants Foundation.
North Penn joins 623 districts across the country as a recipient for the award for 2019. The award is given to school districts that have a high commitment for providing access to music education and make music education part of the curriculum.
In order to be recognized for music education, North Penn and the other districts had to answer a series of questions about topics including funding, graduation requirements, music class participation, instruction time, facilities, support for the music program and community music-making programs.
This recognition comes in a time when new research has come out stating that there are ties between K-12 students who participate in music programs in schools and high success rates. It also shows NPSD’s leadership in following the Every Student Succeeds Act, legislation that was passed in 2015 that emphasizes the importance of music and the arts within schools. It was passed to replace No Child Left Behind, which focused on test results.
“In the North Penn School District, music education is not thought of merely as an ‘add on,’ but is respected as an educational priority,” said Dr. Curtis Dietrich, Superintendent of the NPSD. “Receiving this designation once again speaks volumes to the outstanding music educators that we here at NPSD are fortunate enough to offer our students.”
