A perennial Route 309 traffic chokepoint in Montgomery Township is getting an overhaul.
State funds will be used to widen and add lanes and improve traffic signals at Bethlehem Pike at Stump Road. Rep. Todd Stephens (R-Montgomery) announced Tuesday that Higher Rock Partners has been awarded $1 million from the state Multimodal Transportation Fund.
"I want to thank the Commonwealth Financing Authority for approving my request for help," said Rep. Stephens. "The money will go a long way to covering the costs of the $5.5 million project.”
The funds will be used to add a 40-foot wide, 870-foot extension of Witchwood Drive across Stump Road to a new intersection with Route 309. The new intersection will be widened to provide a separate 12-foot wide, 275-foot long northbound lane and a 200-foot long southbound lane.
The westbound approach of Stump Road and Route 309 will be widened to 11 feet to provide dual left turn lanes.
In addition, both the Route 309 and the Stump Road intersections will be regulated with new traffic signals, according to Rep. Stephens.
