Boy with Special Needs Receives Trike from Upper Gwynedd Police

An act of kindness by the Upper Gwynedd Township Police Department came full circle earlier this week, as their charitable efforts ended up benefitting someone connected to the department.

On Tuesday, the department presented a special tricycle to Jonah, who is the grandson of retired Upper Gwynedd Detective and Magisterial District Judge John Murray.

Every November, the police department intentionally violates the facial hair policy and participates in No Shave November. The participating officers pay a $1 a day “fine,” and then the money collected is donated to Gwynedd Ambucs to purchase special tricycles for children who otherwise would not be able to ride trikes due to physical limitations.

“Lowering our facial hair standard, even for a month or two, is not a small thing for a police department that prides itself on a professional appearance to our community, but seeing Jonah’s reaction makes it worthwhile,” said Upper Gwynedd Police Chief David Duffy.

In 2018, the department raised $480 in “penalties,” and they presented a check to Upper Gwynedd Commissioner Tom Duffy, who is also a member of Ambucs. At that time, the department was told that the donations would go to purchase a trike for Murray’s grandson.

“It is always nice to make a connection with the recipient of a donation,” said Chief Duffy.  “In this case, it was special, since we already had a connection with the Murrays.”
