Smoke Daddy’s Changes Name to Wister’s Barbecue

Following hundreds of suggestions from customers and residents, Lansdale’s beloved barbecue joint has selected a new name and slogan that will carry them into the future.

Wister’s Barbecue—formerly known as Smoke Daddy’s Homegrown Barbecue—will be the new business name going forward, as selected by owner Michael Wister and announced via their Facebook page.

“I have to tell you, I was blown away at the number of responses to my request for help,” said Wister. “That post received over 400 comments. I'm deeply touched.”

The name change follows the threat of trademark litigation by a restaurant group in Chicago that owns “The Smoke Daddy” trademark. The group said the names of the two businesses were too similar, especially as the group planned to sell their rubs, sauce and mixes nationally.

“While some of the claims are silly, the basis is sound: The names are too similar,” said Wister. “It seems compliance, which is generally against my nature, seems to be the best route and I’m in.”

In addition to the name change, Wister’s Barbecue will be retiring the “800 Miles and Back” slogan, in favor of a new slogan, which reads “Crafted with Smoke and Spice.” Wister added that the new name and slogan now reflect the growth of his business.

“When we opened here on Main Street, we had a very simple barbecue menu,” said Wister. “Over the last 16 months, we have evolved tremendously and our menu finally reflects my vision of what I wanted this restaurant to be.”

No timetable was given regarding the necessary rebranding effort, though their Facebook page now refers to the business as Wister’s Barbecue.
