Local Municipalities Declare Snow Emergencies Ahead of Sunday Storm

Towamencin Township (press release)

Due to the storm forecasted for the region this evening through Monday, Towamencin Township has announced that a “snow emergency” has been declared, effective 3 p.m. Sunday, March 3, until 3 p.m. Monday, March 4.

• When a “snow emergency” is declared by the township, all cars must be removed from roadways/streets designated and posted as “Snow Emergency Route." Vehicles not removed are subject to citation and towing.

• The township is also asking all Towamencin residents, even those not living on a posted “Snow Emergency Route,” to remove all vehicles and seasonal vehicles from the roadways, by placing them in their driveways where possible. Do not leave trash receptacles by the roadway or curb; instead store them close to home or inside garage. This will ensure streets are cleared, and allows plow drivers unobstructed ability to plow roadways.

• Move all equipment, such as basketball nets, etc., back from the street line and secure for high winds.

• Check the security and location of your mailbox. The snow will be wet and heavy and can damage mailboxes that are not secure or placed in accordance with USPS guidelines.

Plowing of snow from your driveways / sidewalks into the roadways is prohibited by ordinance.

Check on the elderly and frail in your neighborhoods. If residents know of an elderly neighbor who needs assistance, they are encouraged to help them, including any shoveling of snow.

Upper Gwynedd (press release)

Due to the weather forecast, Upper Gwynedd Township officials have declared a snow emergency beginning Sunday, March 3 at 3 p.m. The snow emergency will remain in effect for 24 hours beyond the conclusion of the storm. During this time, all on-street parking is prohibited.

Thank you for your cooperation.

Lansdale Borough (press release)

The borough will declare a snow alert effective 2 p.m. on Sunday, March 3. For citizens, a snow alert means that all vehicles parked on those streets where signage indicates no parking during a snow alert are required, by law, to be moved elsewhere in order to allow snow plowing of the road surface. Snow alert signage dictates which side of the street residents may not park on when an alert is declared.

Residents may park in their driveways (if available), alternate side of their street or another street not marked "No Parking." It is not the policy of the borough to direct any resident or citizen where to park (i.e. we do not require residents to park in alleys when a snow alert is declared), we can only instruct where parking is not permitted. These parking restrictions are put into place for the purpose of public safety as well as the efficiency of snow clearing on borough streets; vehicles in violation are subject to ticketing and/or towing by the Lansdale Borough Police Department. If you see a vehicle parked on a Snow Alert Route, please contact Lansdale Police at 215-368-1800.

For any other weather related emergency, please dial 9-1-1.

We would also like to remind residents and business owners that it is illegal to deposit snow removed from sidewalks or private property onto any borough street. Ordinance 1172 - Section 302.3.3 prohibits the throwing or blowing of snow into the streets from sidewalk or properties. Violators are subject to fines.

The borough is planning for the snow event with crews out preparing known trouble spots and will remain on call until after the snow alert is lifted. Throughout the storm, crews will be clearing snow on all borough roads which can take up to eight hours for one complete route.

This storm may feature ice which can collect on trees and wires along with windy conditions. Lansdale Electric asks that if you see any downed wires, please stay away and contact them immediately at 215-361-8371 with the location. Under no circumstance should residents attempt to lift, move or adjust electric wires.

It will be posted on the website and social media channels when the Snow Alert is lifted and residents can resume normal parking. Additional information will be tweeted by Chief Trail by following @LansdalePD on Twitter.

The borough also asks citizens to be neighborly and check on elderly or vulnerable neighbors who may need assistance. Also be sure to keep house numbers visible so that emergency responders can find you in case of emergency. Working together to overcome the obstacles and adversity created by weather situations such as these creates a greater sense of community and kindness. We'll get through this together, just as we always do.

Hatfield Township (press release)

Due to the severe winter storm affecting our region, Hatfield Township Chief of Police William J. Tierney has declared a snow emergency for both Hatfield Township and Hatfield Borough, effective as of 5 p.m. today, March 3.  It will remain in effect for the duration of the storm.

North Wales Borough (press release)

Effective 3 p.m. Sunday, March 3, through 3 p.m. Monday, March 4, a ‘Snow Emergency’ is declared for North Wales Borough, Montgomery County, Pennsylvania.

Parking restrictions will be strictly enforced on the posted Snow Emergency Routes of Main and Walnut Streets and cars will be towed.

NOTE: The riding of bicycles is banned within the borough during this snow emergency. This will protect both bicyclists and drivers.

A snow and ice event is expected. All residents are urged to dress accordingly and limit their exposure to the elements.

Please check on elderly or disabled neighbors to see that they are prepared for the storm.

Power outages: I remind you that PECO has no way of knowing that your power is out. You must notify them and, if necessary, follow-up daily. Please remind children to stay away from down wires. Always assume that they are live.

Fire hydrants: I ask residents to be sure that nearby fire hydrants are cleared of snow. Businesses and apartment building owners should remind those plowing parking lots to not bury fire hydrants. This is very important for the safety of everyone and is not the sole responsibility of public works, the fire department, or the water authority. We are in this together.

I strongly urge everyone to exercise caution when driving, until streets have been cleared.
In order to hasten the removal of the potentially large amount of snow, all residents and persons working or visiting in the borough are very strongly requested to find off-street parking during this snow emergency if possible.

As always, I thank everyone for their cooperation during this emergency.

Sincerely,

Greg
Gregory J. D'Angelo, CBO
Mayor of North Wales Borough
