After a competition that involved residents voting, Lansdale has been declared the winner of a rain garden.
Back in May, it was announced that Lansdale’s rain garden, won in a contest by the North Penn Water Authority in conjunction with the Perkiomen Watershed Conservancy, will be put in Whites Road Park.
The contest took place on Facebook and received more than 1,200 votes. Lansdale won with a total of 909 votes.
According to Lindsay Hughes, the community relations coordinator at North Penn Water Authority, the rain garden’s placement near the pump station will have a wide variety of benefits.
“A rain garden will help prevent pollution and erosion into the Towamencin Creek by collecting rainwater that normally overflows into the creek,” said Hughes. “A rain garden in that location will also help increase birds, butterflies and other wildlife.”
“This location is great, as it will help clean water prior to entering the water system, and will also be a visually appealing addition to White’s Road Park,” said Tracy Flynn, the communications coordinator for Lansdale Borough.
According to Hughes, the rain garden will be planted in late summer or early fall. More information will be available on the North Penn Water Authority’s Facebook page as the planting gets closer.
“We hope the community enjoys the beauty the garden will bring to that section of the park while also bringing awareness to the importance of protecting our waterways,” said Hughes.
