Police Issue Statement Regarding Alleged Incident at Montgomery Mall

The Montgomery Township Police Department has issued a statement regarding a heavily-shared Facebook post that allegedly documents a suspicious incident at the Montgomery Mall.

The post, created by a concerned mother who was at the children’s play area with her baby, her sister and her niece, documents what she believes to be an attempted child luring incident that occurred on May 29. The mother notes that while a suspicious female attempted to distract her, she noticed a man going up and down a nearby escalator, and a second man circling the play area.

None of the three suspicious people had children with them, according to the post. The incident was reported to police the following day.

“The suspicious individuals noted in this post did not approach or engage the children,” said Montgomery Township Police Chief Scott Bendig. “Unfortunately, the incident occurred the previous day, thus greatly hampering our ability to identify the individuals and ascertaining the reasoning for their concerning behavior.”

Bendig stressed that it is vital to contact 9-1-1 immediately should an individual observe any suspicious or criminal behavior, as waiting could make it difficult to investigate and corroborate the details.

“Contacting 9-1-1 will ensure a rapid police response and provides a police department with the best opportunity to effectively investigate incidents,” said Bendig.

Calls made over the weekend to Simon Malls—the owner of the Montgomery Mall—have gone unreturned. We will update this article should we receive a response.

(Editor's note: the woman who created the post stated that she informed Montgomery Mall Security at the time of the incident. We have been unable to corroborate that detail with Simon Malls, but since we have still not received a response, we are adding in that portion of her claim to the story.)
