The once vacant parking lot at Ralph’s Corner Shopping Center is no more, as hundreds of shoppers packed themselves in for the Grand Opening of the new ALDI grocery store earlier this morning.
“I’ve never seen this parking lot so full in the entirety of my life, and that dates back to when Clemens Supermarket was here,” said Pennsylvania State Rep. Steve Malagari, who was on hand for the ribbon cutting ceremony. “There’s hundreds of people here.”
Malagari was joined by Hatfield Township Commissioner Laura Thomas in welcoming ALDI representatives to their new location. The ribbon cutting ceremony was held just before 9 a.m., and by that time, two separate lines consisting of hundreds of shoppers had already formed around the building.
“We’re here today in Hatfield Township for the grand opening of the new ALDI grocery store,” said Malagari. “They chose to make a big investment into Hatfield Township, an investment in the 53rd District. It’s going to bring jobs, it’s going to bring new commerce, and it will bring a new breath of life to this shopping center, which hasn’t had a lot of life in quite some time.”
The Hatfield store—located at 2333 Welsh Road—is part of a $3.4 billion ALDI investment to expand to 2,500 stores nationwide by the end of 2022. ALDI currently has more than 1,900 stores in 36 states, serving more than 40 million customers each month.
Per the press release: “The new Hatfield ALDI store layout features expansive refrigeration space to accommodate the fresh, healthy and convenient products people want most. ALDI recently expanded its product offerings, making 20-percent of its total selection new. This expansion is part of the company’s aggressive national growth and remodel plan, and it includes a 40-percent increase in its fresh food selection, with many organic, convenient and easy-to-prepare options. ALDI stores also feature open ceilings, natural lighting and environmentally friendly building materials.”
The first 100 customers through the door during the grand opening were given free gift cards as part of ALDI’s Golden Ticket Giveaway, while other first-day shoppers were given samples of ALDI-exclusive brand foods and a chance to win a year’s supply of ALDI produce.
“We’re very fortunate for the investment they made, we’re happy that they’re here and we wish them a lot of success,” Malagari said. “It’s great to see so much support.”
