Man Arrested On Drug, DUI Charges in Towamencin

Obadiah Johnson, 39, of Reading.

A Reading man is facing DUI and felony drug charges following a traffic stop during the early morning hours of July 21 in Towamencin.

According to the criminal complaint, police were patrolling northbound on Forty Foot Road at 3:44 a.m. when they encountered a blue Chrysler 200 with expired registration. Police initiated a traffic stop of the vehicle, and learned that there was an outstanding warrant in Schuylkill County for the driver, identified as 39-year-old Obadiah Johnson.

The report describes Johnson as extremely anxious during the stop, and states that he did not have a valid license or insurance. The report also states that police saw marijuana in plain view in the vehicle’s center console. Johnson was then detained, according to the complaint.

Police said that Johnson failed a field sobriety test, and a search of his person and his vehicle allegedly uncovered 60 grams of marijuana, methamphetamine, one amphetamine pill and drug paraphernalia. Once in custody, Johnson reportedly stated that he uses the marijuana to make edibles, which he then sells in Washington D.C., according to the complaint.

Johnson was arrested and charged with one felony count of possession with intent to distribute, misdemeanor counts of possession of a controlled substance, possession of marijuana, possession of drug paraphernalia and DUI, and summary counts of driving on a suspended license, operating a vehicle without insurance, suspended vehicle registration and driving an unregistered vehicle.

He was arraigned later that morning by Magisterial District Judge Cathleen Rebar, who set bail at $5,000 unsecured. He was then released from custody. Johnson’s next court appearance is a preliminary hearing on Aug. 22 at 10:45 a.m. in front of Magisterial District Judge Ed Levine.
