The Towamencin Township Police Department has issued a public warning after an elderly resident was almost scammed out of a large amount of money.
According to the release, police were dispatched to a local bank on Friday for a report of an attempted financial scam. The teller informed police that an elderly female was attempting to withdraw a large amount of money because her social security number was compromised and she had to pay to get it fixed.
As the woman attempted to make the withdraw, the “agent” told her to leave the line open on her phone, the report states. The teller then notified police of the scam.
“As a result of the prompt action by that teller, this bank customer did not suffer any financial loss,” said the police department.
Police are asking that residents take a moment to speak with their friends and family about keeping their personal information safe, as well as common trends in financial scams.
The investigation into the incident is ongoing.
